User device affinity in Configuration Manager associates a user with one or more devices. This behavior can eliminate the need to know the names of a user's devices to deploy an application to the user. Instead of deploying the application to each of the user's devices, you deploy the application to the user. Then, user device affinity automatically makes sure that the application installs on all devices that are associated with that user.
Define primary devices that users use every day for their work. When you create an affinity between a user and a device, you gain more app deployment options. For example, if a user requires Microsoft Visio, you can install it on the user's primary device by using a Windows Installer deployment. However, on a device that's not a primary device, you might deploy Visio as a virtual application. You also can use user device affinity to predeploy software on a user's device when the user isn't signed in. Then when the user logs on, the app is already installed and ready to run.
You only manage user device affinity information for computers. Configuration Manager automatically manages user device affinities for the mobile devices that it enrolls.
Manually set up user device affinity
Jan 18, 2017 The built-in help is the closest thing to a comprehensive user manual that Affinity offers. One reason for this is (or at least has been so far) the rapid pace of development & the new features that are constantly being added, which would make a printed manual out of date by the time it went to press.
- In the Configuration Manager console, go to the Assets and Compliance workspace, and select the Devices node.
- Select a device. On the Home tab in the ribbon, in the Device group, choose Edit Primary Users.
- In the Edit Primary Users dialog box, search for and then select the users to add as primary users for the selected device. Choose Add.NoteThe Primary Users list shows users who are already primary users of this device, and the method by which each user-device relationship was assigned.

Jul 17, 2015 Another really nice tool within Affinity Photo is the Quick Mask tool. For those who are not familiar with the tool, it allows users to quickly make masks from selections within an image. You can view it as an overlay, transparency, black, or white. This is a feature within Photoshop, too, but I think it works much better within Affinity Photo. Affinity - the fastest, smoothest, most precise professional creative software.
Set up primary devices for a user
- In the Configuration Manager console, go to the Assets and Compliance workspace, and select the Users node.
- Select a user. On the Device tab in the ribbon, choose Edit Primary Devices.
- In the Edit Primary Devices dialog box, search for and then select the devices to add as primary devices for the selected user. Choose Add.NoteThe Primary Devices list shows devices that are already set up as primary devices for this user, and the method by which each user-device relationship was assigned.
Automatically create user device affinities (Windows PCs only)
Configuration Manager reads data about user logon events from the Windows event log. To automatically create user device affinities, turn on these two options in the local security policy on client computers to store logon events in the Windows event log:
- Audit account logon events
- Audit logon events
To configure these settings, use Windows Group Policy.
Important
If an error causes the Windows event log to generate a high number of entries, it might create a new event log. If this behavior occurs, existing logon events might not be available to Configuration Manager.
Set up the site to automatically create user device affinities
- In the Configuration Manager console, go to the Administration workspace, and select the Client Settings node.
- To modify the default client settings, select Default Client Settings. On the Home tab in the ribbon, in the Properties group, choose Properties. To create custom client agent settings, on the Home tab in the ribbon, in the Create group, choose Create Custom Client Device Settings.NoteIf you modify the default client settings, the site deploys them to all computers in the hierarchy. For more information, see How to configure client settings.
- In the User and Device Affinity group, set the following settings:
- User device affinity threshold (minutes): Set the number of minutes of device usage before the site creates a user device affinity.
- User device affinity threshold (days): Set the number of days over which the site measures the usage-based affinity threshold.
- Automatically configure user device affinity from usage data: Select True to let the site automatically create user device affinities. If you select False, you need to manually approve all user device affinity assignments.
TipFor example, if you set User device affinity threshold (minutes) to 60 minutes and you set User device affinity threshold (days) to 5 days, the user must use the device for at least 60 minutes over a period of 5 days to automatically create a user device affinity.
After Configuration Manager creates an automatic user device affinity, it continues to monitor the user device affinity thresholds. If the user's activity for the device falls below the thresholds you've set, the site removes the user device affinity. Set User device affinity threshold (days) to a value of at least seven days. This configuration avoids situations in which an automatically configured user device affinity might be lost while the user isn't signed in, for example, during the weekend.
Import user device affinities from a file
To create many relationships at one time, import a file that has the details for multiple user device affinities. Make sure the target devices are already discovered by the site and exist as resources in the Configuration Manager database.
- In the Configuration Manager console, go to the Assets and Compliance workspace, and select either the Users or Devices node.
- On the Home tab in the ribbon, in the Create group, choose Import User Device Affinity.
- In the Import User Device Affinity Wizard, on the Choose Mapping page, set this information:
- File name. Specify a comma-separated values (CSV) file that has a list of users and devices between which you want to create an affinity. In this file, each user-and-device pair must be on its own row, with values separated by a comma. Use this format:
<domain><username>,<device NetBIOS name>
- This file has column headings for reference purposes. If the .csv file has a top-row header, select this option. The site ignores the header row during the import.
- If the file you import has more than two items in each row, use Column and Assign to specify which columns represent users and devices, and which columns to ignore during import.
- Complete the wizard.

Affinity Photo was released over a year ago on Mac OS X. Its success on the App Store definitely shows how great the software truly is. It is also proof that people are looking at different options than the traditional Adobe workflow. Until now, one thing refrained many: Affinity Photo was available only on the Apple platform. But today is a new day and the software is now Windows compatible.
Affinity Photo is made available in beta version for Windows and includes all the features of the Mac build up to the 1.5 release. It makes it all the more interesting because a few very useful features were left out until now and made the transition from Photoshop quite difficult for professionals needing a fast workflow. The 1.5 version includes Macros (an equivalent to Photoshop’s actions), Focus Stacking, advanced HDR merging in 32 bits, batch processing, as well as a new way to edit 360-degree images. So the app is catching up on some features it was lacking and even adds new possibilities.
Personal Experience
You probably wonder how good the Windows version is, how it stacks up against Photoshop and the Mac app, or just how stable it is. Well, I have been lucky enough to have access to the beta for the past few days, and I must admit, it’s more than decent! It’s even better than many apps that are not described as beta or RC builds.
The macro tool proves to be quite useful. It is something I was missing in previous Affinity Photo releases. I heavily rely on actions and scripts in Photoshop, and couldn’t live without them to keep my workflow as fast and efficient as possible. Macros are a good start, but it isn’t as powerful as Photoshop’s scripts or even actions. The tool was made very simple and accessible. No condition possible, no breakpoint, or anything like that. Hopefully, this will come down the road, but at least, now, there is a way of speeding things up.
The batch processing tool is very close to what is found in Photoshop. You can choose the output format, the color profile, and a macro that you want to apply. It makes exporting a list of files very easy and convenient.
Regarding the other new options, I will let you be the judge as these are not features that I am used to enough to say if they work well or not. The 360-degree image editing is surely something impressing, though!
In terms of stability and speed, the build I had was very decent like I said above. The speed is very much comparable to the Mac release that I am used to. Meaning it is incredibly fast. How fast? For most things, I would say faster than Photoshop even though CC 2017 is getting better in that regard. As far as stability goes, this is still a beta version. I didn’t find many bugs and the software didn’t crash on me more than once (which might actually be my fault), so it is usable and not just for testing purposes. Keep in mind it is a beta for now, and that stability may be an issue in some circumstances, so don’t get mad if the app freezes or loses some data.
Can it Replace Photoshop?
The interface is very intuitive and is close to enough to Photoshop that you don't have to learn a new software from the start. There are a few shortcuts that are not exactly similar, but it's not always a bad thing to change our customs. The app even offers a few functionalities that will simplify the life of many – the built-in frequency separation and the real-time blending modes are two of them. I have used Affinity Photo since its launch on a regular basis for specific tasks because for some jobs it just performs better and faster. I haven't made the switch yet because the scripts I heavily rely on cannot be used in Affinity, and the new macro feature is not powerful enough for me. However, for most users, Affinity Photo will be more than sufficient, for a price lower than Photoshop. So can it replace it? If you don't need all the fancy advanced features of Photoshop that only a few really use, then surely yes it can.
I am extremely happy to write this article today. We finally have an alternative to Photoshop, one that works on both OS X and Windows and that offers almost as many features as Adobe’s software. Best of all, the pricing makes it very attractive for beginners and amateurs that simply cannot justify a monthly fee. Affinity Photo is $49.99 for Mac and will cost the same on Windows. That is just a little over five months of subscriptions for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
What do you guys think about this news, are you as excited as I am? Every time I wrote about Affinity Photo on Fstoppers, people complained that there was no Windows version. Now that there is, I am curious to know how many of you will give this a try. With a possibly faster-growing community with this new market opening, the software will most likely evolve faster as well and thus bring even more exciting features. I cannot wait to see what the next releases will bring to the table and how it will compare to Photoshop in about a year.
